The Laboratory
The Charles Coulomb Laboratory (L2C), UMR 5221, is a Joint Research Unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Montpellier (UM). The L2C is primarily affiliated with CNRS Physics and secondarily with CNRS Chemistry. It is part of the MIPS Research Cluster at UM.
The L2C covers a broad range of topics, from the most mathematical theoretical physics to physical chemistry and biophysics, with a strong foundation of theoretical and experimental research focused on condensed matter and nanoscience. Its research often lies at the interfaces with chemistry, life sciences, and electronics.
The unit brings together over 100 physics researchers, nearly 50 research support and technical staff, and around 80 non-permanent members. It is organized into 6 Research Areas comprising a total of 18 teams. An administrative service and a set of technical services support the laboratory’s research activities. The L2C benefits from a wide array of advanced experimental techniques, operated within dedicated instrumental facilities.
Through the involvement of its teacher-researchers, financial support, and the hosting of interns, the L2C contributes to 2 master’s programs at the University of Montpellier: the Master’s in Fundamental Physics and Applications, and the Master’s in PhyMed.
